Need another green cocktail in your life? The Shamrock Juice fills that bill. The standard version of this recipe calls for one and a half ounces each of gin, vodka, rum, tequila and blue curacao.

That’s the equivalent of something like three and a half standard drinks. It’s even stronger than the Zombie.

Of course, if that knock you down flat sort of cocktail – and hangover that comes with it – is what you’re after, then by all means stick to the original recipe.

But for those of you who prefer your drinks a little less potent,  this is my modified version of the drink. Instead of 1 1/2 ounces of everything, you get half an ounce of the hard liquors  and 1 ounce of the blue curacao.

That’s still a strong drink, it’s just not enough to flatten you after one.

The way you pour this one, you get a blue hue along the bottom. Above that is green from the orange juice mixing with the blue curacao.

You can serve it like that, and let your guests stir it. When they do, the drink will lose the blue at the bottom, and the green becomes more emerald.

Pictured below is how it looks after it’s been stirred. The blue doesn’t add much to the already green color, which is exactly why I suggest serving it without stirring first.

But do tell your guests to serve it so they don’t end up with several sips of blue curacao at the bottom.

The dominant flavor here is orange, and it’s so dominant that it pretty much pushes all other notes into oblivion. The color is a bright festive green.

I think the hurricane glass is really essential for this one. If you want to have it with a meal, try it alongside this recipe for Honey Lime Glazed Salmon from Chew Out Loud.

And yes, a regular orange is fine for garnish. I used a Cara Cara orange because that’s what I had on hand, and I actually like the look of it quite a lot.

NOTE: You can definitely make this one in a pitcher in advance, except that if you want to impress guests with the layered color effects, I’d leave out the orange juice until you pour.

Which means you would mix together everything but the orange juice in a pitcher and keep that in the fridge.

Then you would pour three ounces of that mixture into glasses filled with ice, and then add 4 ounces of orange juice to each glass.
