Lugger Cocktail Recipe
This version of the Lugger cocktail is tweaked slightly from the original. The extra apricot brandy gives it a touch of sweetness and flavor that would otherwise be lacking.
The original version of this Lugger featured Calvados, a type of apple brandy, regular brandy, and just a dash of apricot brandy. I’ve upped the amount of apricot brandy because otherwise it basically just tastes like straight brandy.
The Origins of the Lugger Cocktail
The origins of the Lugger cocktail can be traced back to the early 20th century. It is believed to have originated in the coastal regions of England where “lugger” refers to a type of sailing vessel commonly used for fishing and smuggling.
The cocktail was likely named after the luggers that frequented these shores.
Exploring the Key Ingredients
The Lugger cocktail features three main ingredients that are all actually types of brandy.
Calvados
Calvados is an apple brandy hailing from the Normandy region in France. It is made by distilling fermented apple cider and aging it in oak barrels.
Calvados adds a distinct apple flavor and a touch of sweetness to the Lugger cocktail – but only a touch.
Brandy
Brandy is a spirit that is distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice. It gives depth and complexity to the Lugger cocktail with its rich flavors derived from the aging process in wooden barrels.
Brandy acts as the backbone of this cocktail, balancing out the other ingredients.
Apricot Brandy
Apricot brandy is a liqueur made by distilling fermented apricots or infusing them in brandy. It adds a more noticable fruity sweetness than does the Calvados.
It enhances the overall flavor profile of the Lugger cocktail. The original version only called for a dash of it, but I recommend giving it equal play with the other two brandies.
It goes a long way in elevating this classic drink.
Tips to Enhance Your Lugger Experience
While the classic Lugger cocktail recipe is delightful on its own, here are a few tips to take your Lugger experience to the next level:
Experiment with Different Brands: Try various brands of Calvados. Try cognac instead of regular brandy.
Each brand may have its own distinct flavor profile, adding a unique touch to your Lugger cocktail.
Choose Quality Spirits: Since the Lugger cocktail relies heavily on its key ingredients, it’s important to choose high-quality spirits for a truly exceptional taste. Opt for well-aged Calvados and brandy for maximum flavor.
And most importantly, try different brands of apricot brandy.
Balance the Sweetness: If you prefer a slightly sweeter Lugger cocktail, add a touch more apricot brandy. On the other hand, if you prefer a drier version, reduce the amount.
Play with Garnishes: While a twist of lemon peel or a slice of apple works beautifully as garnishes, don’t be afraid to get creative. Experiment with other fruit slices or herbs like thyme or rosemary to add visual appeal and aromatic notes.
Serve with Complementary Foods: The Lugger cocktail pairs well with a variety of foods, particularly those that complement its apple and brandy notes. Consider serving it alongside cheese platters, roasted pork dishes, or apple-based desserts for a delightful culinary experience.
