Blood Orange Margarita Recipe

The Blood Orange Margarita is all about the flavor of blood oranges, which is slightly sweeter or slightly more bitter than your typical orange, depending on the varieties we’re comparing.

Along with that juice, you get lime juice and Cointreau with silver tequila – my personal favorite – so this drink is light and refreshing.

But there is definitely something else going on in this drink: sage. When you shake everything together, you include the sage sprig. That causes the leaves to release some of that savory flavor. If you want, you can even muddle them to bring it out more.

Fresh sage has a more subtle flavor than the dried spice that gets sprinkled onto poultry or into stuffing. It contrasts nicely with fruit flavors, which is why it works so well with the blood orange.

The juice and the herb bring out the best in each other, and the end result is hard to describe. It’s not quite savory at all, but neither is it your usual fruity sweet drink.

Of course, blood oranges aren’t available everywhere at all times, so you can use a blood orange cocktail mix. The juice is better, but the mix will give you a very nice tasting cocktail, too.

I grow fresh sage, so I have it on hand most times of the year. I promise you, if you can grow it, that’s the best way to experience it. But if you can’t, you should be able to find it at any grocery store.

I don’t recommend putting a salt rim on your glass for this one – a little bit of sugar is fine if you have a sweet tooth, but I find salt isn’t always the best match with blood oranges (but your mileage may vary, so feel free to experiment).
