Mage’s Fire Cocktail Recipe
The Mage’s Fire can be served on demand, but it’s designed to be mixed together and aged. It probably gets its name from the spooky blue to purple color it turns.
This is kind of a magical cocktail, and for years, I didn’t have the right recipe. My recipe was for a shortcut version, and it lacks what’s special about this version.
The Origin Story
One of our readers recently contacted me to let me know some things about this drink. It was created by a bartender named Jack Greeney some years ago, probably in the 80s.
The reader was introduced to the drink at an SCA event in Florida in the 80s. SCA describes itself as “an immersive history group”. Like a Rennaissance Fair, except you participate in making your own period clothes and brewing your own drinks.
That should give you a feel for what’s so unusual and cool about this drink.
The Ingredients
You need some specific ingredients, but they are very affordable and easy to find.
- DeKuyper Hot Damn cinnamon liqueur
- Vodka (a nice drinkable one)
- Blue curacao
You can buy any brand of the last two, but the first one really needs to be that specific one to get the special effects from this drink.
Aging the Drink
The most unusual thing about making this drink is that you have to age it for at least 30 days. It can be aged for at least a year.
The aging process causes the ingredients to meld together so the flavors all work wonderfully. And it gets a fascinating color that ranges from deep purple to pale blue, depending on the lighting behind it.
How to Serve It
Some people enjoy it as a shot, but it really has such a great flavor that it’s worth sipping. As mentioned above, this drink tastes like orange and cinnamon, which is a nice combination.
Serve it in any clear glass you like, since the shifting color will show through any of them. There’s no need for garnish or straws.
Since you mix it in big batches, it’s great for serving at get-togethers or playing drinking games. It makes a perfect Halloween drink, too.
